Reddit user qlstar points out that the Galaxy S23 Ultra’s One UI 7 update only marginally increased the empty space at the left and right edges of the status bar, but the change is small enough for most people to ignore. In contrast, the Galaxy S24 Ultra’s One UI 7 update brought too much blank space in the status bar, and you can see why users would be annoyed.

Sometimes, it just takes a little while before you’re able to find your stride. Android 15 debuted last year without a heck of a lot of momentum, and Samsung took its sweet time in even getting its One UI 7 beta program started. Month and months later, when those betas had finished their job and Samsung was ready to get public distribution going, the company had to hit “pause” on its release just days after things got started. Lest you start thinking One UI 7 was cursed, in the days since we’ve seen Samsung’s fortunes quickly reverse, and that’s a trend that’s only continuing now.

While it’s been a bumpy road getting here, now that One UI 7 updates are reliably hitting Galaxy phones and tablets, Samsung’s been speeding up its release schedule. Yesterday we told you about One UI 7 starting to arrive for the Galaxy S22 series, Z Fold 4, and Z Flip 4, all ahead of the planned May release. Now we’re already hearing about updates for the previous generation, also arriving ahead of schedule.

The One UI 7 rollout is finally in full swing for Samsung flagships, and the company has allegedly begun work on One UI 8, too. We’ve already seen leaked One UI 8 builds show off a few key features, and now, a new leak is showing off the brand new video summarization feature coming to Samsung Galaxy devices with One UI 8 through the Samsung Internet app.

Sammyguru discovered that Samsung is working on a new AI Video summarization tool within the Samsung Internet app. This tool seemingly analyses the video, detecting speech, visuals, and captions. It is said to use a multi-modal AI model then to summarize the video’s key points, presenting a list of them to the user.

Although the One UI 7 rollout has been pretty slow overall, Samsung has been picking up the pace in recent weeks. After rolling out the new OS to the Galaxy S23 and Tab S10 in the US last week, it is now starting to arrive on six more Galaxy models.

Samsung’s Good Lock app, which allows users to customize One UI the way they want, has long been restricted to the Galaxy Store and certain regions. But that’s all changing as it arrives on the Google Play Store and in more markets.

Its whole premise is to keep files private and avoid surfacing them if anyone else uses your device by chance. However, Secure Folder isn’t as secure as Samsung promises it to be. We’ve already found one flaw in Secure Folder that lets anyone see which apps and photos you have stored within. Now, there’s another Secure Folder flaw.

Sammobile found that the Gallery app inside Secure Folder in One UI 7 can make its contents visible outside of Secure Folder through auto-generated stories. Firstly, the Gallery app inside Secure Folder can automatically create stories from your photos and videos, which sends out a notification to your system outside of the Secure Folder. What makes the flaw worse is that tapping on the notification will reveal all its content, even outside the Secure Folder.

We’re seeing reports from users suggesting that Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23 Plus, and Galaxy S23 Ultra users in the US, India, and South Korea can now sign up for the One UI 7 beta program.

Samsung is known for offering one of the best software update policies among Android phone makers, but the company has recently faced mounting criticism over the speed of its rollouts. The delays surrounding One UI 7, which is based on Android 15, have been particularly frustrating for users. Despite Android 15’s official release last year, Samsung only recently confirmed that its One UI 7 rollout would begin in April — months behind schedule.

The leaked build version, S938BXXU1BYC1/S938BOXM1BYC1/S938BXXU1BYC1, suggests that work on One UI 8 is already well underway — roughly two months ahead of Samsung’s usual timeline.

Samsung has confirmed that “the official update of One UI 7 will be available starting in April.” The exact date isn’t provided, but we can finally circle the fourth month of the year in red pen.

We’re so starved of official information from Samsung about One UI 7 that we can’t help but look at every leak and rumor with a glimmer of hope. Android 15 has been around for months now, but existing Samsung users have nothing to show for it outside of betas for the Galaxy S24. Now, a new leak is doing the rounds, and it suggests we could finally see a stable rollout of One UI 7 for Samsung’s lineup from April onwards.

If you’ve ever tried out a third-party launcher on a Samsung phone, you may have noticed that some things don’t work as expected. Certain animations, for example, aren’t as smooth — or sometimes not there at all.

Over on the r/Samsung subreddit, user “Amazing_Emergency_69” was curious about this. Specifically, they wondered why the One UI app launch/close animations don’t work on third-party launchers. They contacted Max Rumpf, the lead developer of the popular Niagara launcher. Rumpf’s explanation is not super surprising, but is still enlightening.

The comment in question comes from a Samsung Community moderator (via Reddit) who appears to be part of the India Beta Team. They claim that the One UI 7 beta program is now closed and that the “stable update will be released very soon.”

I like a lot of what Samsung has done with Android 15. It’s added several helpful wrinkles to One UI 7, like an alphabetized, vertical-scrolling app drawer, customizable widgets, and a Now Bar that draws out the best of Apple’s Dynamic Island without sitting quite as prominently at the top of the display. However, it’s done something else as part of the One UI 7 refresh — something I can’t stand. Samsung has split its notification shade from its quick settings dropdown, and it’s broken my brain a little bit.

Wait, what’s wrong with that?

It’s been a taxing few months to be a Samsung fan. From a hardware perspective, things are at a bit of a standstill. Flagships like the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy S25 Ultra are technically superb, but they’re extremely safe and minor upgrades from their predecessors.

If that’s the case, Samsung is surely doing more interesting things with software, right? It is! The company introduced a bunch of new Galaxy AI features with the Galaxy S25 series, and its latest One UI 7 update is one of the most significant visual refreshes we’ve seen in years.

Although it’s been four months since Google released the first stable build of Android 15 for its Pixel devices, Samsung has yet to roll out the update to most of its phones. Recent reports suggest that the company may still take a while to release One UI 7 based on Android 15 to the Galaxy S24 series and other devices in its lineup, with the update possibly not arriving until April or even May. This is quite surprising for a company that’s built a reputation for offering timely Android upgrades over the past few years, but Samsung may be able to turn things back around with the subsequent One UI release.

According to leaker Ice Universe, Samsung may be able to save face by releasing the One UI 8 update based on Android 16 to its devices much earlier than anticipated. While it’s too early to say whether the company will be able to pull off this feat following such a massive delay, it is quite possible since Google plans to roll out stable Android 16 sometime in Q2 2025.

Samsung used to be infamous for delivering super-delayed Android platform updates to its Galaxy smartphones. The OEM managed to completely turn this narrative around over the past few years, going from being the slowest to becoming the fastest and most consistent in delivering updates. However, with One UI 7, Samsung has dropped the ball, as the stable One UI 7 update is still nowhere to be found for its existing device lineup. If the newest leak is to be believed, we’ll be waiting for a very long time.

According to a report by Sammobile citing unnamed sources, Samsung will likely release the stable One UI 7 update to existing/older Galaxy smartphones only when the Galaxy S25 Edge launches. Separate rumors have suggested an April-May timeline for the release of the Galaxy S25 Edge, so all Samsung smartphone owners (other than those with the Galaxy S25) may have to wait until then to experience One UI 7 in its stable avatar. Stable One UI 7 is only available on the new Galaxy S25 series.

How frustrating must it be right now to be an Android fan who’s running an older Samsung Galaxy phone? Anyone who picked up the Galaxy S25 is in good shape, with the newly launched phone arriving equipped with Samsung One UI 7, based on Android 15. But even though Android 15 hit stable months ago, Samsung has yet to update its older phones and tablets with it. That day is still looming out over the horizon, as it seems Samsung has plans for many more betas before the stable release.

Samsung’s had a One UI 7 beta going for the Galaxy S24 since late last year, and with the beta shutting down in the lead-up to the S25 launch, it sure felt like a public release was imminent. That did not happen.

By default, Android devices offer unrestricted access to the wide selection of content on the web and on their preinstalled app stores, which can be problematic if they’re left in the hands of unsupervised minors. Parental control apps like Family Link can limit what content is available to minors, but they don’t work with all apps. The Samsung Internet and Galaxy Store apps, for example, aren’t affected by Family Link restrictions. A new feature in One UI 7 will let parents manage what content children can access through the Samsung Internet and Galaxy Store apps, though.

When Samsung unveiled its Galaxy S25 series last month, it spent a lot of time highlighting the new AI features available on the three devices. As usual, though, Samsung didn’t have time to talk about every new AI feature on the Galaxy S25. One such new addition is called “suggested replies,” and it uses on-device AI models to come up with potential responses to messages you receive in WhatsApp.

Under Settings > Advanced features > Labs on the Galaxy S25, there’s a new option for suggested replies. According to its description, the feature gives you “AI-powered suggested replies to chat and text messages you receive,” but only if you are using the Samsung Keyboard app. It is not available if you use an alternative Android keyboard.

Samsung has released a fresh software update for last year’s flagship Galaxy S24 lineup. The update is currently rolling out in the company’s home market of South Korea, and the February 2025 security patches are the only significant change included in the release.

Many of Samsung’s Good Lock modules haven’t been working properly for those of us using One UI 7, leaving us to wait for our favorites to be updated for the latest version of the operating system. Home Up, the module that lets users customize the home and overview screens, just got updated for One UI 7 with a ton of new features, and I’ve spent the morning diving deep into every sub-menu and setting.

Home Up version 16 is rolling out now to devices running One UI 7, so you’ll need a Galaxy S24 in the beta or a Galaxy S25. I tried sideloading the APK on my Z Fold 4, which runs One UI 6.1.1, but it failed to install. On my S24 Ultra, it didn’t show up for me in the Galaxy Store’s update section. Instead, I had to tap into the module’s info page inside Good Lock, tap Go to store, and then the Update button showed itself.

iOS 16 introduced Live Activities in 2022 as a new form of ongoing rich notifications. Since then, we’ve seen several Android OEM skins also experiment with some form of active and ongoing rich notifications that differ from your standard notifications. Google announced Live Updates for Android 16, but Samsung beat it to the punch with Now Bar on One UI 7 (based on Android 15). Now, third-party apps are starting to bake in support for these ongoing notifications, and the latest entrant to the party is Google Maps.

As spotted by CID on X, Google Maps v25.05.01.719889437 supports the new Now Bar functionality on One UI 7.

Although the camera hardware on Samsung’s new Galaxy S25 series isn’t dramatically better than last year’s lineup, the devices offer some handy upgrades that should level up your photography and videography experience. These include 10-bit HDR and LOG video support, a virtual aperture feature in Samsung’s Expert RAW app, and an audio eraser tool to remove unwanted sounds from videos. In addition, Samsung has announced some improvements for One UI‘s RAW image editor, giving users access to more advanced editing tools.

Samsung introduced the RAW image editor with One UI 6.1.1, allowing users to edit RAW images on device. With the One UI 7 update for the Galaxy S25 series, the company has revealed that the editor is getting six new editing menus and a histogram.

Update: January 23, 2025 (1:10 AM ET): Samsung has provided some clarity on the future of Samsung Messages, which could be important for those who use the app instead of Google Messages.
